Doug Weaver is the director of undergraduate studies and professor of Baptist studies in the Department of Religion at Baylor University.

  • Where did you grow up?

I was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and lived in Triangle, Virginia (next to Quantico Marine Base). We moved to Richmond when I was 8, and I graduated from Armstrong High School as part of the first integrated class in 1974.

  • What is your favorite verse, book or story in the Bible? Why?

Psalm 100.

The first “major” memory verse assignment from either Vacation Bible School or Sunday School!

  • What is your favorite movie? Why?

“Shawshank Redemption.”

It is the one I have seen the most.

  • Who are three people you admire?

My church history mentors (Glenn Hinson, Bill Leonard and Buddy Shurden); Martin Luther King Jr. and Mary Alice Birdwhistell, my pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Waco, Texas.

  • What is one little-known fact about yourself?

I scored 44 points in my first church recreation league basketball game (11- to 12-year-old team).
