A majority of U.S. adults (52 percent) read the Bible on their own outside of church less than three to four times each year.
Of the remaining adults, 14 percent reported daily Bible reading, 13 percent read it a couple of times each week, 8 percent once a week, 6 percent once a month and 8 percent three to four times a year.
This data was part of the American Bible Society’s 2018 State of the Bible report (based on Barna Group survey data) released July 10.
Nearly one-third (32 percent) of U.S. adults “never use, listen to or pray with the Bible.”
More than twice as many respondents said they considered coffee a “daily necessity” (37 percent) as those who felt the same for Bible reading (16 percent).
Yet, the survey also found that “two-thirds of Americans (66 percent) express at least some curiosity to know more about what the Bible says, including one in three (29 percent) who express a strong desire.”
