One week from today is Giving Tuesday (Dec. 3), a movement launched in 2012 to encourage charitable giving during the week following Black Friday’s sales.
In 2018, more than $400 million was donated on Giving Tuesday, with 3.6 million people making online donations and the mean gift amount being $105.55.
EthicsDaily.com is committed to educating, engaging and empowering people of faith to seek justice in society and to advance the common good. Reader support makes it possible to provide all resources for free.
EthicsDaily.com is also committed to strategic, synergistic partnerships, knowing that we are stronger when working together for common causes and believing that “a rising tide lifts all boats.”
This year, your donation to EthicsDaily.com on Giving Tuesday will not only help us continue our work, but also will support the work of our partner, Fellowship Southwest, a regional network launched in 2017.
EthicsDaily.com will send 20% of all donations made on Dec. 3 to assist with Fellowship Southwest’s immigrant ministry initiatives.
Fellowship Southwest is led by Field Coordinator Marv Knox, with its immigrant ministry initiatives overseen by Jorge Zapata, associate coordinator of Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Texas and director of Fellowship Southwest’s ministry to immigrants.
“EthicsDaily is blessed by numerous partnerships impacting the world for the gospel of Jesus Christ. Many of our partnering organizations advocate for a biblical ethic that creates ministries for the common good of all people,” EthicsDaily.com Executive Director Mitch Randall said.
“Fellowship Southwest and Jorge Zapata are engaged in some of the most important social justice ministry to date,” he said. “Their commitment and work among immigrants at the southern border model the biblical mandate of welcoming the stranger among us. EthicsDaily is proud to share a portion of our donations with such a Christ-like cause.”
While Fellowship Southwest’s network includes three regional Cooperative Baptist Fellowship organizations – CBF of Oklahoma, CBF of Texas and CBF West – it is an ecumenical organization that seeks “to break through denominational definitions and boundaries so we can do more work together instead of getting bogged down in churchy talk.”
A few ways that Fellowship Southwest has ministered to and advocated on behalf of immigrants include:
- Supporting individuals, local churches and faith-based ministries who are providing for the needs of asylum seekers (see here and here).
- Participating in an interfaith prayer vigil in July 2019 in Dallas on behalf of immigrant families separated from one another by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
- Organizing a prayer vigil in June 2018 to call attention to the detention of unaccompanied minors, which EthicsDaily.com Executive Director Mitch Randall attended. EthicsDaily.com also provided video coverage.
You can learn more about Fellowship Southwest’s border ministry via its website, as well as through a video series produced by EthicsDaily.com following an August 2019 Fellowship Southwest trip to the U.S.-Mexico border.
“The immigration crisis has delivered a world of need – and opportunity to demonstrate the presence of Christ – to the U.S.-Mexico border,” Knox told EthicsDaily.com via email. “Fellowship Southwest has been blessed to serve immigrant asylum-seekers by coming alongside the churches that are ministering to people encamped on their doorsteps.”
“We’re grateful for Jorge Zapata … for building a network among churches and faithful, loving Christians along the border,” he said. “And we’re inspired by the pastors and their church members, who give of themselves every day to minister on both sides of the border.”
Knox added, “Thanks to EthicsDaily for including Fellowship Southwest in Giving Tuesday. We feel privileged to serve alongside you and to join you as channels of blessing.”
