Charles Johnson is pastor of Bread, a faith community in Fort Worth, Texas, and founder and executive director of Pastors for Texas Children.
- Where did you grow up?
I was born in Monroeville, Alabama, where my family lived for generations, but grew up in Pensacola, Florida, in the wonderful First Baptist Church there.
- What is your favorite verse, book or story in the Bible? Why?
Revelation 3:20.
This verse spoke to me when I was saved at age 13. And still speaks to me as I am continually being saved today. Christ never quits knocking.
- What is your favorite movie? Why?
“Casablanca.”
Because of its endless appeal of adventure and romance during a critical time in human affairs, and because non-heroic people do heroic things.
- Who are three people you admire?
Jim Pleitz (my pastor growing up), John Claypool (my pastoral mentor) and Diane Ravitch (public education advocate and key mentor in our ministry at Pastors for Texas Children).
- What is one little-known fact about yourself?
I cannot pass a garage sale. Rummaging through someone else’s accumulated personal paraphernalia is fascinating.
